Troon North's Monument Course is the definitive high-desert golf experience in Scottsdale. Designed by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish, it routes through massive granite boulder formations and dense saguaro cactus at the base of Pinnacle Peak — the postcard round that defines Arizona golf for most visitors.
At 7,070 yards and par 72, Monument plays as target golf through pristine Sonoran desert. There are no houses on the course, no development visible from most holes, and the design uses the natural terrain so effectively that the boulders feel like they were placed by the architect rather than by geology.
What Makes It Worth Playing
The boulder holes. Monument's signature moments come on holes where massive granite formations frame the fairway or sit directly in your line of play. The visual drama is unlike anything else in the valley — towering rock faces with saguaros silhouetted against them, all with a manicured fairway threading through.
The conditioning matches the setting. Greens are fast and true, fairways are tight, and the desert waste areas that border every hole are genuine hazards — you're hitting off hardpan and rocks if you miss the short grass. It rewards precision and punishes wayward shots without being unfair about it.
Booking and Access
- Public window: 90 days out via troonnorthgolf.com. Morning prime times during January–March sell quickly.
- Resort advantage: Four Seasons Scottsdale at Troon North guests get extended booking windows. Several other Scottsdale resorts have partnership agreements — ask your hotel if they offer Troon North preferred booking.
- Replay rates: Available for same-day play of both Monument and Pinnacle. If your group has the stamina for 36 holes of desert golf, it's a strong value.
Course Strategy
Accuracy off the tee matters more than distance. The fairways look wider from the tee box than they actually play — desert waste areas eat balls that miss by 10 yards. Club down off the tee on dogleg holes and take the extra club into greens (the altitude at 2,500 feet gives you a slight distance boost, but the firm greens and false fronts demand precise carry distances).
The back nine is the more demanding stretch. Holes 14–17 are where the boulder drama peaks and the margin for error shrinks. If you're managing a bet, this is where it gets decided.
